Carleton University 4th Year Minor Project

Inspired by Bauhaus and Danish Mid-century Modern design movements, the KR3 uses a durable support structure in combination with tensioned textiles to create a flat packed design with a lightweight, minimal aesthetic. The slender frame adapts forms reminiscent of Marcel Breuer's tubular steel designs, appearing to push the limits of the wood. Machined steel crossbars plug into the wood frame to provide rigidity and structural integrity. Sculpted arm rests reference the organic forms found in Finn Juhl's chair designs, adding a sophisticated elegance to an otherwise simple form. Interchangeable textiles or rope issue a flexible and forgiving seat. The chair was made through rudimentary manufacturing techniques and can be assembled with a single Allen key.
